PHYS 110 + MS 201

Objectives: Getting student familiar with the typical distributions of the physical properties of oceanic waters as well as the horizontal and vertical water movements due to the variations in these properties.

Contents:  General introduction - Typical distributions (vertical , horizontal , temporal) of physical properties in world oceans – Horizontal and vertical water movements induced by variations in physical properties distributions (geostrophic currents, thermohaline circulation) – T-S diagram and its utilization in determination of sources, properties and mixing ratios of water masses.

Practical:  Instruments and sampling methods used for determination of sea water physical properties - Plotting temperature, salinity and density profiles with depth – Plotting vertical and horizontal distributions of sea water physical Plotting T-S diagram and its utilization.
