Abstract |

Melamine is an organic compound used in the production of plastics, dyes and fertilizers. Melamine has been added to milk and various food to increase protein content. This resulted in deliberate adulteration of food products with melamine that led to many diseases specially renal failure. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the role of natural bees honey against the adverse effects on the kidney functions induced by melamine feeding in male rats. The results of this study revealed that the consumption of melamine at a dose of 20000 ppm in the diet for 28 days induced renal dysfunction as reflected by the highly significant elevation in levels of urea, creatinine and uric acid and a decrease in total protein, albumin and sodium and increase in potassium levels in serum as well as increased in liver enzyme, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase activities. In addition, decrease in catalase and glutathion-S-Transferase, and increase in lipid peroxide activity was encountered. The SDS-PAGE showed induction of two new high molecular weight bands and another low molecular weight band as a result of melamine supplementation. Histological changes of the melamine treated group revealed hyperplasia and damage of kidney cells and accumulation of melamine crystals in kidney, ureter and urinary bladder tissues, whereas the liver tissues showed necrosis in the hepatic tissues around the central veins. Treating male albino rats (that supplemented regularly with 20000 ppm melamine), with natural bees honey at a dose of 2.5g/kg body weight for 28 days, improved both kidney and liver functions and increase in antioxidant enzymes (catalase and glutathion-S-Transferase) and decrease in lipid peroxide. In addition to the positive impact on the shape of the cell. In conclusion, this study revealed that the use of natural bees honey has the ability of preventing kidney dysfunction induced by melamine |
